Vitamin D Reduce Pain During Delivery

Benefits of vitamin D was not only limited to bone health and immune system. A new study says, lack of vitamin D can make the birthing process becomes more painful.

In that study, the scientists measured the vitamin D levels of 93 pregnant women before they give birth. All respondents had requested an epidural for pain relief during labor.

Then the researchers measured how much pain medication required each pregnant woman during labor. Then compared to the amount of drug use among women with vitamin D levels are higher and women with lower vitamin D levels.

As a result, women who have low vitamin D levels require more pain medication than women whose vitamin D levels high. It shows, they experience pain during childbirth is more intense that they need more medicine.

"Women are often deficient in vitamin D during pregnancy. In fact, from our findings those with low vitamin D levels have increased the pain of childbirth," said Dr Andrew Geller, an anesthesiologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles.

Lack of vitamin D in a long time known to cause depression and pain, but this is the first study that highlights the link between vitamin that comes from the sun's rays with the level of pain during childbirth.

Vitamin D can be found in a number of foods, such as types of oily fish, eggs, cereal, and milk. You can also increase the levels of vitamin D obtained from sun, spending time outdoors, or sunbathe in the morning. The Department of Health in England even recommend that all pregnant women and nursing mothers consume a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency is common during pregnancy, especially in high-risk groups including vegetarian, women who are rarely exposed to sunlight and ethnic minorities.
